Garmin OnBoard
We recently installed Garmin’s OnBoard Man Overboard system on a local center console as part of a safety-focused electronics upgrade.
The system integrates directly with compatible Garmin chartplotters and can automatically trigger alerts and mark a location if someone enters the water while wearing a paired MOB tag.
The customer was looking for a modern safety solution that would provide additional peace of mind while offshore fishing and running long distances on the water.
Unlike traditional kill-switch lanyards, the Garmin OnBoard system allows multiple wearable tags to be paired for family members, guests, or crew onboard.
The Goal
The Installation
This installation included:
-
Garmin OnBoard MOB hub integration
-
Wearable MOB tag setup and pairing
-
Garmin chartplotter integration
-
Network configuration and testing
-
System setup and customer walkthrough
The installation was completed with clean integration into the existing Garmin electronics system.
Why we Like These Systems

Straightforward integration
-
Practical safety upgrade
-
Scalable for multiple passengers
-
Compact/simple hardware
-
Good value compared to larger electronics projects
How it works
Garmin’s OnBoard MOB system is designed to improve safety and recovery response if someone unexpectedly enters the water.
The system allows up to eight wearable MOB fobs to be paired at one time, helping protect family members, crew, and guests onboard.
If a paired fob goes overboard, the system immediately sounds an alarm and automatically marks the GPS location directly on the Garmin chartplotter to assist with recovery.
If the captain’s designated fob enters the water, the system can also trigger an engine shutdown to help prevent the boat from continuing under power.
The wearable fobs can be used several different ways depending on the customer’s preference, including:
-
wristband/watch-style wear,
-
carabiner attachment,
-
or floating keychain setups.
Because the system integrates directly with compatible Garmin electronics, it adds another layer of onboard safety without requiring complicated operation or additional monitoring.
